Hymn to an Art-o-matic Laundromat
by Michael R. Burch

after Richard Thomas Moore’s “Hymn to an Automatic Washer”

O, terrible-immaculate
ALL-cleansing godly Laundromat,
where cleanliness is next to Art
—a bright Kinkade (bought at K-Mart),
a Persian rug (made in Taiwan),
a Royal Bonn Clock (time zone Guam)—
embrace my *** in cushioned vinyl,
erase all marks: ****, vaginal,
******, inkspot, red wine, dirt.
O, sterilize her skirt, my shirt,
my skidmarked briefs, her padded bra;
suds-away in your white maw
all filth, the day’s accumulation.
Make us pure by INUNDATION.

Published by The Oldie, where it was the winner of a poetry contest. This poem was inspired by the incongruence of discovering "works of art" while doing laundry at a laundromat with coin-operated washers and dryers. I was reminded of the experience while reading Richard Moore’s “Hymn to an Automatic Washer.” Keywords/Tags: hymn, art, America, Americana, laundry, laundromat, washer, dryer, appliances, clean, cleaning, cleanliness, clothes, clothing, underwear, god, godly, godliness, water, baptism, inundation, sonnet, analogy, humor

It left residue on these two hands
so much that you won't shake them
you won't grab them when these hands are reaching out
You're scared these ***** hands might infect you
these two hands
they're bruised from the anger
scarred from the anxiety
& sticky from the memories he left
these hands are worn
exhausted
& weary
looking for rest
so when they reach out
these hands, this heart- they're in distress
and even though these hands are sticky
I am not asking you to clean them
Just hold them
make them feel seen
cuz there's residue now
but one day these two hands will be clean

Staggered and twisted
Like vines of a vineyard.
Bound
Waterous veins flowing earth's surface.
Bound
Unchallenged evidence
mysterious edge's.
Bonded
Archives dated,
contemplated.
Earths cremation?
Recreations
Inspirations
Binding

Light creates beautiful skies,
all earth's beauty
entwined.
Filling earth and its surface, stand back and watch
nature takes over.
Permanent impressions
characteristics.
Footprints of nature
Bonding life
Unsolved Mysteries
No space left behind.

Unearthed evidence revels
memories.
I love the earth and all its secrets.

You can pick up a brick
and throw it through a glass pane,
or you can look for others
and make a home.
Even if the world is ****,
it’s up to you to plant flowers
in the fertilizer.

everything's so white, clean
when life's not like that

Have you seen shell  friend of mine,
How the world has changed?
How they treat  the seas right now.
Nothing beautiful remains.
How all the oceans are full with dirt.

So many plastic things thrown in.
I’m very sad dear friend of mine
What they do is a sin.
All the fish are dying now .
Even turtles are suffocating too.

You’ll see where we’ll end soon.
They are so clever now.
With only brains and no feelings more
Their cleverness reach full circle now
I guess they are dumb again.

When ocean life will be no more.
They all will die slowly too.
Everything on earth will die
It will be the end of planet earth too.
Just hold my hand friend shell of mine we will die together too.

Shell✨🐚
If we don’t change our ways soon it will be the end of planet earth
